The main goal of the department is to provide high-quality education in history and geography by developing students’ theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research culture. The department also aims to form students’ spatial and historical thinking, and to train pedagogical specialists for the Republic and the local region who respect national and universal values and can work effectively within the education system. The department seeks to introduce modern teaching technologies into the educational process, develop academic mobility, and ensure the integration of science and education.

The teaching staff of the department consists of 18 instructors, including 4 PhD holders and 3 Candidates of Sciences. The majority of the faculty members are actively engaged in research activities. This is evidenced by their participation in grant-funded projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, regular publication of articles in high-ranking journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, as well as in journals recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education (CQASHE), and their participation in international scientific conferences and seminars.
The faculty of the Department of History and Geography in Education maintains active research collaboration with higher education institutions in both near and far abroad. In order to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research activities, provide academic mentoring, and develop specialized courses, the department has established partnerships with foreign scholars as well as with researchers from leading national universities and research institutes.
The Head of the Department, PhD Dr. A.T. Serubaeva, is a performer of the Program-Targeted Funding (PTF) project BR28713029 of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan titled “Study of the Social Role of Folk Art in the Formation of Modern National Identity: Transformation and Reconstruction of Spiritual Culture.”
To support new ideas and initiatives of young people, the annual “Tauelsizdik Urpaktary” grant is awarded on the initiative of the Head of State. In the field of Information Technologies, a third-year student of the educational program 6B01601 — Training of History Teachers, President of the DU Union Student Parliament, Assel Tokpanova Tynyshbekkyzy, successfully defended her project and was awarded a grant of 3 million tenge.
Two R&D (R&D/НИОКР) projects are being implemented at the department:
Jointly with the Taraz Innovative Multidisciplinary College under the Sherkhan Murtaza University — on the topic “History of the Aulieata Region.”
“History of Kazakh Ornaments and Ways of Their Promotion” — jointly with IE D. Madibaeva.
Academic Mobility and International Cooperation
Within the framework of the educational program 6B01603 — History and Social Studies (IP), academic mobility of the teaching staff has been organized with the Kazakh National Women’s Pedagogical University under the educational program 6B01603 “History,” as well as with the Uzakbai Zhanibekov University under the educational program 6B01518 — Geography (IP).
In Jizzakh (Republic of Uzbekistan), Senior Lecturer D.R. Madibaeva conducted classes in the discipline “Methods of Teaching History” for 3rd–4th year students majoring in History at the Jizzakh State Pedagogical University from October 27 to December 14, 2025, within the framework of academic mobility.
Regarding academic mobility, PhD Dr. G.B. Idrissova delivers the course “Historical Local Studies” online for second-year students of the educational program 6B01603 “History” at the Kazakh National Women’s Pedagogical University (Almaty).
