History of the Department
The Department of Russian Language and Literature has a distinguished history and long-standing traditions. In June 1967, by Order No. 420 of the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Kazakh SSR, the Faculty of Philology was established at the Jambyl Pedagogical Institute named after the 50th Anniversary of the October Revolution. The faculty included the Department of Russian and Foreign Languages headed by S.F. Vasilenko.
The department staff consisted of six lecturers: S.F. Vasilenko, Zh.K. Ospanov, D.A. Ospanova, E.A. Tokareva, V.Zh. Ismagulova-Kuleshova, and A.A. Smagulova.
In 1968, the Department of Russian Language and Literature was separated from the Department of Russian and Foreign Languages. It was headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor R.I. Muzafarov. The department staff included B.S. Sadullaev, I.I. Devitsky, N.P. Kudryashov, L.I. Kozhemyakina, L.V. Tolkacheva, N.F. Sivkova, V.S. Li, L.K. Shpak, N.K. Glushkov, Zh.A. Ismailova, O.V. Radutnaya, Kh.T. Abdrakhmanova, and G.S. Imanbekova.
The highly qualified faculty members are distinguished by their professional excellence and organizational skills. Among them are well-known scholars such as A.G. Shukanov, M.S. Dzhilkishieva, A.Zh. Kadiyaliyeva, L.A. Aladina, M.E. Minaidarova, G.K. Abdrakhman, G.A. Altaeva, G.A. Bedusenko, S.O. Muminov, and N.V. Svidova. Young researchers are also actively engaged in scientific projects, including Botagoz S. Baizhigit, a young PhD holder. More than 300 academic works have been published in various scientific and pedagogical editions, including 5 monographs and over 30 textbooks and teaching manuals.
Over more than half a century of its history, the department has trained more than 20,000 teachers who successfully work in higher education institutions, schools, and colleges. Many of them have become prominent scholars, journalists, and public and cultural figures.
Currently, the department provides training under a number of educational programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
The professionalism and high qualifications of the faculty are reflected in honorary awards and titles. Winners of the “Best University Teacher” competition of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan include G.K. Abdrakhman (2007, 2020), Sh.M. Maigeldiyeva (2016), L.V. Safronova (2012), M.S. Dzhilkishieva (2009), and G.T. Dzhylkybekova (2015). The “Y. Altynsarin” badge was awarded to Professor A.G. Shukanov, Associate Professors L.A. Aladina and N.V. Svidova, and Candidate of Philological Sciences G.A. Altaeva.
The department actively cooperates with Russian higher education institutions. The university operates the Open Education Center of the “My History” Foundation, established with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The foundation organizes courses in teaching Russian as a foreign language. Students of the Faculty of Philology and Humanities who completed these courses received internationally recognized certificates.
With the foundation’s support, large-scale events are held at the university. A photo exhibition dedicated to the period of the Great Patriotic War was organized, attended by Vice Consul of the Russian Federation Maria Simakova and Honored Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, writer Vasily Shupeikin. In addition, within the framework of the “Future Scholars” project, lectures by Russian academics were organized. Lectures on topical issues were delivered by Doctor of Philology, Professor Vladimir Ivanovich Annushkin of the Department of Russian Verbal Art and Intercultural Communication at Moscow State University named after A.S. Pushkin, as well as by the Head of the Department, Arina Gennadyevna Zhukova.
A Memorandum of Cooperation was also signed with Glazov State Engineering and Pedagogical University named after V.G. Korolenko located in the city of Glazov, Russia.
